Bridging the Healthcare access gap in the East Midlands

A NEW initiative to encourage more healthcare and non-clinical staff to take up sign language as an extra language and skill is now available locally. The Signs4Life scheme is to help improve health access and care for patients, service users, and colleagues, who may be hard of hearing.

Radiyya Jahan, Signs4Life partnerships officer, explains “There are more than nine million hard of hearing people registered in the UK. We have already worked with social workers, housing staff, teachers, the local NHS, and Royal Mail. We are offering a community 6-week BSL program, which you can enjoy and access from the comfort of your home, delivered through Zoom”. Signs4Life is leading efforts towards a society in which people with disabilities have full access and are working to raise the public and political awareness of disability provision.

Development Opportunity

Martin Fahy announced on a recent Team Talk Live this opportunity for managers looking to broaden their approaches with staff and others who may not manage staff but need to influence and problem solve in projects. A coaching approach can be significantly effective in allowing staff to develop and grow, seek their own solutions and broaden consideration of how to tackle issues in work.

This programme comprises a virtual launch on Teams (run twice to allow flexibility in holiday time) followed by 2 half day face-to-face workshops to introduce Coaching models, approaches and skills and to enable practice of these essential skills. More detail is in the flyer attached.

To express an interest please discuss with your line manager and then email Bob Baker OD Business Partner at bob.baker@nhs.net. There is a maximum of 16 participants for this course.

Covid-19 vaccination update for parents of clinically extremely vulnerable children

We appreciate that for parents with vulnerable children the increased prevalence of Covid is very worrying, and as such they will wish to get their child vaccinated as soon as possible. We are keen to do this too.

At the moment we are waiting to receive the final guidance from the national vaccination team to clarify the requirements to administer this vaccine to this younger cohort. Whilst we are waiting for this guidance our senior clinical leads and their teams are finalising the delivery arrangements and making sure that we are ready to commence the booking process as soon as we receive confirmation from the national team that the guidance has been approved. We are confident that we will be in a position to offer appointments for those eligible children and young people in the coming weeks.

Once we are in a position to offer appointments we will update you and provide details of how to book appointments.

Fraud Alert – Calls from “matching” mobile phone numbers

Scam calls

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) is warning the public to be vigilant of scam calls that appear to be coming from numbers similar to their own. Commonly, the first seven digits (07nnnnn) match the victim’s own number. The calls impersonate well-known government organisations, or law enforcement agencies, and will ask the recipient of the call to “press 1” in order to speak with an advisor, or police officer, about unpaid fines or police warrants.
